“It is with profound grief that we announce the passing of six of our dear colleagues, following the tragic fire at Afriland Towers,” the statement read. “Their painful loss leaves an immeasurable void.”

“Preparations are underway for a memorial service to honour the lives of the departed staff and mark their passing with dignity and solemnity,” the company said.

It further urged unity and solidarity among its workforce in the period of mourning. “In this period of grief, strength must be drawn from one another. May the souls of the departed rest in peace,” the statement added.

United Capital also commended emergency services and first responders for their swift intervention during the incident.

LEADERSHIP reports that Afriland Towers which houses the offices of United Capital Plc, a branch of United Bank for Africa (UBA), the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and others, was engulfed by smoke during the fire, trapping several occupants and forcing some to leap from upper floors in a desperate bid to escape.

The disaster claimed at least 10 lives, including four FIRS personnel who were on duty at the time.
