In a press statement, the Niger Delta Youth Congress, Initiatives for Ethics and Value Orientation, and other groups express their concerns over the current leadership of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). They urge President Asiwaju Bola Tinubu not to hand over former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, to EFCC Chairman Abdulrashid Bawa for investigation. In this article, we explore the groups’ demand for a credible EFCC leadership and comprehensive investigations into alleged corruption involving prominent individuals.

The joint statement, signed by Comrade Israel Uwejeyan, National Coordinator of the Niger Delta Youth Congress, Comrade Godfrey Osolase, National Convener of the National Movement for Democratic Change, and Comrade Bello Idowu, National President of Initiatives for Ethics and Value Orientation, emphasizes the loss of confidence in the current leadership of the EFCC. The groups believe that a thorough investigation requires the stepping aside of the EFCC Chairman to ensure credibility.

The groups stress the importance of a strong and credible EFCC for the prosperity and development of the nation. They call on the federal government to take action by arresting individuals such as Abubakar Malami, Saadiyya Umar Farouk, Hadi Sirika, and others who are believed to be principal collaborators in alleged corruption.

While acknowledging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s initial steps in addressing their grievances by relieving Godwin Emefiele of his post and subjecting him to investigation, the groups express reservations regarding the quality and caliber of the EFCC’s leadership under Abdulrashid Bawa, whom they consider a suspect.

The groups emphasize the need for immediate action to secure available evidence of corruption against principal collaborators such as former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Saadiyya Umar Farouk, and former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika. They assert that the compromised leadership under Bawa, along with officials believed to be influenced by Malami, should be relieved of their positions.
