10 Parties To Contest Niger LG Elections

A total of 10 political parties will contest the local government elections scheduled for November 1, 2025.
Meanwhile, only the All Progressives Congress (APC) featured candidates in the 35 local government areas for the elections.

LEADERSHIP reports that though 10 political parties have featured 805 candidates for the post of chairmanship, vice-chairman and councillorship for the election some of them did not feature candidates in most local government areas.

Confirming this yesterday the chairman of the Niger State Electoral Commission, Engr. Mohammed Jibril Imam, said the APC featured 25 candidates each for chairmanship and vice-chairman positions and 274 candidates for councillorship, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) featured 23 candidates for chairmanship, 21 candidates for vice-chairman and 233 candidates for the office of the councillorship.

Similarly, he said the Social Democratic Party (SDP) with 16 candidates each for chairmanship and vice-chairman and 144 candidates for councillorship; ZLP featured two candidates for councillorship, while Labour Party featured five candidates for chairmanship, four candidates for vice-chairman and 12 candidates for councillorship.

Others he listed were Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) with two councillorship candidates as well as Booth Party (BP), Action People’s Party (APP), National Rescue Movement (NRM), Action Alliance (AA) and Accord party with one councillorship candidate each.

According to him “As our journey towards the November 1, 2025 Local government council elections progresses, it can therefore rightly be said that the 2025 local government council elections are smoothly on course and from today, the political parties are officially allowed and cleared to commence public campaigns to the 31st October, 2025.”

He added that “Participating parties must realise that their utterances and conduct during the campaigns would enable for a peaceful and successful Local government council elections.”
