President of the United States, Joe Biden, has said that the mere purchase and usage of Marijuana was not enough reason for anyone to be jailed.

President Biden formally made this proposal on Thursday on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, reclassifying Marijuana as a less dangerous drug in the United States.

The proposal to reclassify Marijuana (Cannabis) was formally unveiled by the Biden Administration at the end of April after which the process was launched by the Justice Department on May 16.

Previously classified as a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act in 1970, Marijuana would be downgraded to a Schedule III drug under the new proposal. This means that it would be put alongside drugs like Ketamine and painkillers containing Codeine, considered to have a moderate to low likelihood of dependence.

While Biden’s proposal would not make marijuana legal, it would, however, result to fewer arrests at the federal level and would remain a controlled substance until the public comment period and hearing process were completed, Strait Times news has said.
