The Directorate of Road Traffic Services also known as the FCT VIO has attributed the scarcity of number plates to the shortage in supply from the Federal Road Safety Corps plant.
Spokesman of the VIO, Kalu Emetu, in a chat with LEADERSHIP Sunday yesterday admitted the challenge of shortage of number plates, saying Abuja number plates are always on high demand while the supply is low.
He said if the FCT VIO would get the approval to produce the plates themselves just like Lagos State does, the challenge would be checked effectively.
On reports of people buying number plates for as high as N150, 000 from third parties, Kalu said the agents and touts who stay around the VIO office at Mabushi had perfected plans of buying off the number plates online then posing as VIO officers to resell them to motorists.
He admitted that sometimes, some bad eggs with the organisation also collude with touts to perpetuate such activities and urged the motoring public to always enter the office instead of patronising touts.
