The senator representing the Kaduna South Senatorial District, Barrister Sunday Marshall Katung, has stated that the establishment of a science-focused tertiary institution, the University of Applied Sciences in Kachia, was a deliberate consideration in the community’s request.

Senator Katung made this assertion during a discussion on Thursday with journalists from Southern Kaduna in Zonkwa, Zangon Kataf local government area.

He expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and other prominent figures nationwide for their significant contributions towards establishing the university, emphasising that it will equip youth with the skills needed to meet current global manpower demands.

The lawmaker also revealed that he has sponsored a bill to establish a Federal Medical Centre in Kafanchan, which would alleviate the burden on residents who currently travel long distances for specialised medical services.

Addressing the issue of insecurity, particularly the rampant kidnappings for ransom in the Kauru local government area, Senator Katung lamented the troubling trend and assured that relevant security agencies are making concerted efforts to tackle the menace.

He expressed particular concern over the involvement of relatives or acquaintances of the victims in facilitating these kidnappings, urging them to abandon such harmful behaviour.

Senator Katung refuted the narrative that the violence in Southern Kaduna stems from clashes between farmers and herders, clarifying that the region’s security challenges are purely due to banditry targeting his constituents.

Discussing the primary concerns of the people in his Senatorial District, he highlighted agriculture and education as vital areas requiring attention, promising to focus on these sectors, alongside others, to enhance the area’s economic viability.

However, he noted that some local elites pose a significant challenge due to their divisive tendencies, which often exacerbate tensions in the community.

In light of these issues, Senator Katung urged the media to foster unity and understanding, thereby paving the way for meaningful development.

Earlier, Mr Ango Bally, chairman of the Southern Kaduna Journalists Forum, explained that the purpose of the meeting was to engage with the senator and promote his Senate activities.

He noted that various narratives about developments in Southern Kaduna are circulating, and the parley would provide an opportunity for first-hand information, enabling the media to convey the community’s story accurately.

While thanking the senator for his participation, Bally also appreciated the various assistance he provided to the forum.
