The federal government yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sapphital Ltd, to implement the Labour Employment and Empowerment Programme (LEEP).

The agreement, signed in Abuja between the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment and the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, aims to train and equip 2.5 million Nigerians annually with job placement, entrepreneurship and workforce development skills.

Speaking at the event, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, minister of state for labour and employment, said the initiative aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises job creation and economic empowerment.

The minister noted that LEEP is designed to be inclusive, catering not only to youth but also to retired personnel and elderly citizens who are still capable of contributing to the economy through remote work and skill-based jobs.

“Through LEEP, we are creating pathways for skills development, job placement, and entrepreneurship. This collaboration ensures that workers across sectors can access meaningful employment and contribute to national growth,” she said.

Also speaking at the event, minister of youth development Ayodele Olawande reiterated that the initiative reinforced the government’s commitment to empowering young people.

He added that the LEEP initiative is focused on action, not just promises, and will play a crucial role in job creation, economic expansion, and innovation-driven growth.

“This partnership between the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Youth Development proves that this government is serious about tackling unemployment.

By integrating vocational training, technology, and mentorship, we are equipping Nigerian youth with skills that will enhance their competitiveness in the economy”, Olawande said.

With a vision to train 2.5 million people per year, LEEP aims to tackle critical challenges affecting the workforce while advancing the government’s broader employment agenda.

When rolled out nationwide, the initiative is expected to offer training in key sectors and provide direct access to job opportunities.
