Wike Demands Quality Finish For Ongoing Bus Terminal Projects

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike has raised concerns over the finishing work at the Mabushi bus terminal, calling on the FCTA Transport Secretariat to ensure that all ongoing bus terminal constructions within the territory meet high-quality standards.

During an inspection of the Mabushi terminal and several key road projects, Wike expressed his disappointment with the terminal’s current state of completion.

He instructed the Secretary of Transport to oversee improvements, emphasising the importance of quality in construction.

“I will not accept the finishing at the Mabushi terminal because finishing is key. The contractor must return to complete their work.

“So we can invite the President to inaugurate the Mabushi Bus Terminal. Overall, we are on schedule and happy with what we see, but finishing structures like this is essential. I have pointed out some aspects that need correction,” he said.

In addition to the bus terminal, Wike praised the progress on roadworks along the Apo to Wassa road and the bridges linking the Kubwa Expressway to Jabi, commending the contractors for meeting his expectations.

“You can see that CGC is doing an excellent job, and by the grace of God, that will be ready. The interchange along the Kubwa Expressway, managed by Gilmour, has also assured us that it will be completed soon,” he noted.

However, Wike expressed some scepticism about the timeline for the project joining Jabi and Mabushi but stated, “They believe they can wrap that up by the second week of June, so let’s keep faith in their commitment.”

Responding to questions on why the administration introduced a new land policy, the minister said the policy aimed at curbing land speculation.

“The reason for the policy is to stop land speculators. If someone says they want land in Abuja but cannot develop it within two years, that is simply land speculation,” Wike explained.

He clarified the allocation payment process: “If you have been given an allocation, you should be able to pay within 21 days to receive your Certificate of Occupancy (C-of-O). What is wrong with that? It is also about generating funds for the government.

“Many people secure Certificates of Occupancy and hold onto them for years without developing the land. We want to prevent that. Why would you apply for land if you don’t have the means to pay for the C-of-O? It does not make sense. 21 days is sufficient.”
