Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced plans to dualise the Outer Southern Expressway (OSEX) from Apo to Wassa Junction to alleviate traffic congestion and stimulate economic growth.
Wike made the disclosure on Friday in Abuja during the inauguration of the completed 15-kilometre left-hand service carriageway of OSEX Stage II, stretching from Ring Road I to Wassa Junction.
“This expansion is critical to eliminating traffic bottlenecks, improving vehicular movement, and fostering economic activities in the FCT,” Wike said.
He revealed that the initial contract for the left-hand service carriageway was awarded in 2017 at ₦6 billion but was later revised to ₦21 billion in 2021 due to variations.
On assuming office in August 2023, Wike said he discovered the project had been abandoned due to funding constraints.
“The right-hand carriageway was overburdened with heavy traffic, slowing down commerce.
That is why we prioritised completing this project as part of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to finishing all ongoing projects,” he said.
The minister credited the successful completion of the road to funds from ground rents and urged residents to fulfill their tax obligations to enable more infrastructure development.
