Against all odds, Team Nasarawa has qualified in four key disciplines for the 2025 National Youth Games.
A contingent of 154 members departed Lafia for Ilorin, Kwara State, to participate in the zonal eliminations. Despite facing stiff competition at the North Central zonal eliminations held in Ilorin, Team Nasarawa excelled in Boys’ football, Hockey (Boys and Girls), and Girls’ Volleyball. The 9th edition of the National Youth Games will take place in Asaba, Delta State, from 26 August to 6 September 2025.
During the zonal eliminations in Ilorin, Team Nasarawa defeated the host state, Kwara, 1-0 in their opening football match, triumphed over Plateau State in their second match, and drew 1-1 against Team Niger in their final fixture, finishing at the top of the table with seven points, ahead of Team Plateau who came in second.
Team Nasarawa also secured places in the Hockey Boys’ and Girls’ categories, finishing first in the Girls’ event and second behind Niger in the Boys’ category.
The team concluded their Zonal Eliminations in Ilorin by winning the Girls’ Volleyball category, ahead of Team Benue.
Team Nasarawa participated in five sports: football, hockey, volleyball, basketball, and handball.
The team has stepped up training efforts in hopes of making a lasting impression at the main National Youth Games, which commences on 26 August in Asaba.
