One person has been confirmed dead while five others sustained injuries in a road accident that occurred at Majidun, inward Ogolonto, on Mile 12-Ikorodu road in Lagos State.

According to a statement by the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, the crash resulted from excessive speeding by a commercial bus driver.

Taofiq said the injured victims were rushed to a nearby hospital, while the deceased was deposited at a mortuary.

“LASTMA hereby announces a tragic road traffic crash which occurred in the early hours around Majidun, inward Ogolonto, directly opposite MRS Filling Station, Ikorodu. The accident involved a Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number EPE 494 XM and a stationary tipper truck.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the ill-fated commercial bus, chartered to convey passengers to a scheduled programme in Ogijo, experienced brake failure. The driver, who was travelling at a perilously excessive speed, consequently lost control and forcefully collided with a truck positioned at the roadside for diesel purchase.

“The brutal impact resulted in the instant death of an adult female passenger, while five female occupants and one male sustained severe, life-threatening injuries. While the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital, the remains of the deceased were handed over to security personnel who conveyed them to the General Hospital, Ikorodu,” the LASTMA spokesman stated.

Taofiq added that LASTMA personnel removed the wreckage of both vehicles to restore traffic flow. He said the drivers of the commercial bus and the stationary truck were arrested and handed over to the police.

“In a swift response, LASTMA operatives apprehended the tipper truck driver who attempted to flee upon witnessing the tragedy. The driver of the commercial bus was likewise arrested. Both individuals were handed over to officers of the Ipakodo Police Division for comprehensive investigation.

“To restore order and ensure seamless vehicular movement toward Ikorodu Garage, LASTMA personnel efficiently removed the mangled remains of both vehicles from the roadway,” he added.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who expressed grief over the incident, extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

Bakare-Oki advised motorists to exercise utmost restraint, vigilance, and discipline on the highways by avoiding excessive speed. He stressed that overspeeding impairs a driver’s ability to respond to sudden mechanical failures or hazards, increasing the likelihood of fatal crashes.

He reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to protecting lives and promoting a safer motoring culture across Lagos State.
