Former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has tipped Wilfred Ndidi as the most suitable candidate to become the team’s next captain, believing that the Besiktas midfielder is already regarded as a leader by his teammates.
According to Oliseh, the former Leicester City midfielder commands significant respect within the Super Eagles squad.
“At present, I think there is no doubt about the respect the players have for Ndidi. He is a player who participates in every match,” he said on the Oliseh Insight Podcast.
“I am not attempting to influence who will be captain, but I believe Ndidi already embodies the role since he captained the last game.”
Oliseh, a former Nigerian coach who previously selected Ahmed Musa over John Mikel Obi as the national team captain, emphasised that anyone eventually appointed as captain should demonstrate strong leadership qualities.
He noted that effective captaincy involves more than simply wearing the armband or waiting for instructions from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Nigeria is set to compete in Morocco for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where they have been drawn in Group C to face Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania.
