No fewer than 200 secondary school students from public schools in Osun State have been trained to inculcate the habit of saving and creating wealth to commemorate the 2026 World Savings Day.
Speaking with newsmen after opening the training organised by Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) at Osogbo Grammar School, Osogbo, Osun State, on Friday, the directo-general, Mr Thompson Oludare Sunday, said the event would not only inculcate savings culture in the students but build their investment capacity and entrepreneurial skills.
Thompson, who was represented by the assistant director, Communication and Public Affairs, Mr Adegbenga Fabuyi, disclosed that the theme for the year’s programme was “Building Financial Resilience: This is not a Savings Account”.
He noted that the training would enable the students to identify different investment opportunities around them, how to build on them, which are advisable and which are not, and, above all, to learn the skills involved in investments.
He posited that the exercise is part of the federal government of Nigeria’s financial inclusion drive, designed to bring everyone across different strata of society, whether in the private, economic, or public sectors, into the financial system to achieve self-reliance and boost the economy.
“So these students here are lucky because they are going to be exposed to all of these, and then we will now encourage them to go back to their various schools, to now go and replicate this, pass this knowledge on to those that are not here, they are representing students in Osun State”
In his remarks, Mr Abolarinwa Tunde, who represented the commissioner for Education, Hon Dipo Olawale, commended the NDIC for the training programme and said the training will equip the students with the dream of making it without seeking quick money that would ruin their lives.
He disclosed that the 20 students recruited from 10 schools for training will pass on what they learned to others, thereby training the trainers.
