The National Sports Commission (NSC) is setting its sights on a new era for shooting sports in Nigeria, following a pivotal meeting between Chairman Shehu Dikko and the leadership of the Nigeria Shooting Sport Federation (NSSF).

Commodore Shettima Mohammed Shagir, President of the NSSF, led his delegation to the Commission’s office at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, where discussions laid the groundwork for significant advancements in the sport.

The core of the meeting revolved around a comprehensive strategy for the development of shooting sports across the nation. Key areas of focus included bolstering grassroots participation, implementing robust talent identification programs, and meticulously preparing Nigerian athletes for upcoming international competitions. Both parties acknowledged the immense potential within shooting sports, highlighting its status as an Olympic discipline offering multiple medal opportunities.

Commodore Shagir outlined the NSSF’s ambitious plans to expand the sport’s reach. This includes the introduction of more regional competitions, designed to unearth hidden talents from diverse parts of the country. These regional events will feed into structured national programs, ensuring a clear pathway for promising athletes to develop their skills and compete at higher levels. The federation believes that by casting a wider net, they can identify and nurture a new generation of sharpshooters who can represent Nigeria on the global stage.

He commended the NSSF’s proactive approach and pledged the Commission’s assistance in facilitating the federation’s initiatives. The collaborative spirit demonstrated during the meeting signals a strong partnership aimed at elevating Nigeria’s presence in the international shooting sports arena. With a renewed focus on grassroots development and a clear vision for talent pathways, Nigeria is poised to make its mark in the world of competitive shooting.
