The United Kingdom has summoned Iran’s ambassador to London, Seyed Ali Mousavi, over an alleged spy plot and growing security concerns linked to Tehran’s activities.
Britain’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office said the move followed the recent charging of two individuals under the National Security Act for allegedly assisting a foreign intelligence service.
According to the government, the action reflects its commitment to protecting national security and confronting what it described as Iran’s “reckless and destabilising actions” both at home and abroad.
The development came after two men—one an Iranian national and the other a British-Iranian dual citizen—appeared in a London court last week, accused of spying on the Jewish community on behalf of Tehran.
Prosecutors alleged the suspects carried out surveillance on potential targets, including a synagogue, in what authorities described as hostile intelligence-gathering operations.
British security agencies, including MI5, along with lawmakers, have repeatedly raised concerns over what they see as an increasing threat from Iran, particularly amid heightened tensions involving the United States and Israel.
In a related incident, police said an Iranian man and a Romanian woman were arrested for attempting to breach the Faslane naval base in Scotland, which houses the UK’s Trident nuclear submarines.
Authorities said the Iranian suspect has since been released pending further investigations, while no charges will proceed against the Romanian woman for now, although that could change if new evidence emerges.
The latest diplomatic move comes amid fears that the United Kingdom could become a potential target due to its support for US operations, including allowing American forces to use British bases in actions the government insists are purely defensive.
