Arsenal moved to the brink of winning the Premier League title after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Burnley at the Emirates Stadium on Monday night.

A first-half header from Kai Havertz proved decisive as Mikel Arteta’s side stretched their lead at the top of the table to five points ahead of second-placed Manchester City with just one game remaining in Arsenal’s campaign.

However, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City still have two matches left to play, meaning the title race remains firmly alive heading into the closing stages of the season.

Arsenal began brightly and nearly took an early lead in the 15th minute when Leandro Trossard struck the post with a fierce effort from outside the penalty area after being set up by Eberechi Eze.

The hosts continued to dominate possession and created several opportunities, with Havertz missing from close range before Eze forced Burnley goalkeeper Max Weiss into an impressive save midway through the first half.

Burnley threatened occasionally on the counterattack, with Hannibal Mejbri wasting a good opportunity in the 27th minute after being released by Loum Tchaouna.

Arsenal’s pressure eventually paid off in the 37th minute when Bukayo Saka delivered an inviting cross from a corner kick and Havertz rose highest to guide a close-range header into the bottom corner for his crucial goal.

The Gunners remained on the front foot after the restart and came close to doubling their advantage. Eze rattled the crossbar in the 54th minute before seeing another effort brilliantly saved by Weiss moments later.

Saka also went close with a curling effort just past the hour mark, while Burnley struggled to create clear-cut chances against Arsenal’s disciplined defence marshalled by Gabriel Magalhães and Declan Rice.

Arteta introduced fresh legs late in the game, including Viktor Gyökeres and Gabriel Martinelli, as Arsenal managed the closing stages professionally despite seven minutes of stoppage time.

Burnley attempted to force a late equaliser, but Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya remained largely untroubled as the home side held on for a valuable three points.

The victory keeps Arsenal firmly in control of the title race and increases the pressure on Manchester City, who must now win their remaining fixtures to deny Arteta’s men a first Premier League crown since 2004.
