Dolly Parton’s Name Set To Live On At Nashville Airport

Dolly Parton’s name could soon become the first thing millions of travellers see when they arrive in Nashville, following a unanimous vote to begin the process of renaming the city’s international airport after the late country music icon.
The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority Board of Commissioners voted 6–0 on Friday to begin the process of incorporating Parton’s name into Nashville International Airport, just weeks after the legendary singer died at the age of 80.
The final name has not yet been determined, meaning the airport has not officially become “Dolly Parton International Airport”.
Officials said they are working with the relevant parties to determine how best to incorporate the singer’s name and legacy.
The move follows a campaign that gathered significant public support after Parton’s death on August 25.
More than 175,000 people have reportedly signed an online petition calling for the airport to be renamed in her honour.
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee had earlier announced his support for the proposal, describing the airport as the place where Tennessee welcomes the world and saying it was fitting for it to carry the name of the state’s “favorite daughter.”
Parton’s connection to Tennessee runs deep. Born in the state’s Sevier County, she rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most recognisable figures in country music, with a career spanning more than six decades.
Her influence, however, extended far beyond music.
Through her Dollywood Foundation and Imagination Library, Parton became known globally for her philanthropy, particularly her commitment to childhood literacy. The Imagination Library has distributed hundreds of millions of books to children around the world.
Her music also helped cement Nashville’s reputation as the heart of country music, with songs such as Jolene, 9 to 5 and I Will Always Love You becoming part of popular culture across generations.
The proposed airport tribute therefore goes beyond celebrating a singer. Supporters say it recognises Parton’s contribution to Nashville’s cultural identity, tourism, economy and global reputation.
The decision also carries an unusual political dimension. Tennessee has a Republican-led state government, while Nashville is governed by Democrats, yet officials from both sides have backed the airport tribute, making it a rare point of bipartisan agreement.
The renaming process could take time, and the airport’s existing three-letter code, BNA, is expected to remain unchanged.
For an artist whose songs travelled around the world, there could hardly be a more fitting tribute.
Dolly Parton spent her life putting Tennessee on the global cultural map.
Now, Nashville wants her name on its gateway to the world.
