Pep Guardiola is planning an unexpected return to the Etihad Stadium to stand with his former club, Manchester City, as it confronts a major crisis.
The ex-City manager is expected to be at City’s next home match, a Champions League encounter with Paris Saint-Germain on October 14. It is understood he has informed senior club officials that he wants to “be with his people.”
City have been thrown into turmoil after an independent commission found them guilty of all charges relating to breaches of Premier League financial regulations between 2009 and 2018. The club denies any wrongdoing and has appealed.
Guardiola stepped down as manager at the end of last season and has since been taking a break in Barcelona.
Over 10 years in charge, from 2016 to 2026, he collected 20 trophies. However, his legacy is now likely to be affected by the fact that some of that success occurred during the period under investigation. He was also manager for the whole of the four-year investigation.
Guardiola has recently spoken out in support of City’s owners. When asked about the case, he consistently maintained that club bosses had told him there had been no wrongdoing. Earlier this week, he posted a message of support on social media.
“I want every single Manchester City fan across the world to know I am here; more than ever,” Guardiola said.
“I am, always have been, always will, be behind my club, my owner, my chairman, Ferran (Soriano, CEO), the players, staff, Enzo (Maresca) and you, our unique supporters. Let me be clear – we will get through this together. I love you all.”
