Dr Mustapha Abdullahi has been elected President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), defeating former D’Tigers captain Olumide Oyedeji and former international Ejike Ugboaja in Thursday’s election in Abuja.
Abdullahi secured 40 of the 48 votes cast to emerge victorious, while Oyedeji polled eight votes. Ugboaja failed to secure any votes.
Former presidential aspirant Igoche Mark had withdrawn from the race on Wednesday, citing concerns over the fairness and credibility of the electoral process.
Abdullahi’s election ushers in a new administration at the federation, with the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria set to succeed outgoing president Musa Kida.
In a related development, Ugo Udezue emerged as NBBF Vice-President unopposed, having been the sole candidate for the position.
The new leadership is expected to address key issues affecting Nigerian basketball, including domestic competitions, grassroots development, players’ welfare, funding and the administration of the game.
Abdullahi takes over at a crucial period for the sport, with the national women’s team, D’Tigress, enjoying notable international success and stakeholders calling for stronger structures to sustain basketball development across the country.
His administration will be expected to build on those achievements while strengthening domestic basketball and creating better opportunities for players and other stakeholders.
