A support group for President Bola Tinubu, the National Patriotic Front for Tinubu (NPFFT), has warned that the All Progressives Congress (APC) risks losing Bauchi State in the 2027 governorship election unless it reconsiders its candidate.
The group, in a statement issued in Abuja at the weekend, alleged that the APC governorship candidate, Mohammed Abubakar, lacks the capacity to deliver the state in the 2027 polls and called on him to resign his candidacy, arguing that a former governor who lost re-election while in office remains hugely unpopular.
“The NPFFT after extensive consultations and a careful assessment of the emerging political realities in Bauchi State, is compelled to make this urgent and unequivocal appeal to the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“The APC must urgently reconsider its gubernatorial candidacy in Bauchi State. We specifically call on Mohammed Abubakar to voluntarily resign as the APC gubernatorial candidate and give the party an opportunity to field a candidate with broader grassroots acceptance, stronger popularity and greater electoral appeal,” the statement read.
According to the statement, signed by its drector-general,Castro Ezama, and national secretary,
Hon. Musa Zubairu, the call is borne out of political realism and concern for the future of the APC in Bauchi State, stressing that “political parties do not win elections merely because they possess structures, resources or influential leaders. Elections are ultimately decided by voters.”
They argued that “a gubernatorial candidate must be capable of mobilising the grassroots, uniting party members, attracting undecided voters and persuading citizens across different political, ethnic, religious and generational constituencies,” which they claimed Abubakar lacks.
The NPFFT urged the governorship candidate to put the party first by demonstrating “political maturity and statesmanship by considering voluntary resignation from the gubernatorial candidacy in the larger interest of the APC.”
The group also called on the APC leadership to urgently review its Bauchi governorship candidacy and identify a more popular, acceptable and electable candidate ahead of next year’s poll.
