Chelsea moved to the top of the Women’s Super League with a 6-2 victory over Tottenham at Stamford Bridge, marking Sonia Bompastor’s 50th match in the competition and extending their league winning run to five games.
Lauren James and Ellie Carpenter both scored twice, while substitutes Sjoeke Nusken and Maika Hamano also got on the scoresheet. Tottenham’s goals came from Matilda Vinberg and Signe Gaupset.
Chelsea’s second-half ruthlessness proved decisive. After a competitive first half, they scored three goals in nine minutes to take control. James opened the scoring by dispossessing Tottenham defender Toko Koga near the box, turning and driving forward before finishing from a tight angle past Lize Kop. Spurs deservedly equalised when Vinberg headed in Julie Blakstad’s cross at the far post after a sustained spell of pressure.
Tottenham were on top early in the second half, but Alyssa Thompson’s dribbling created Chelsea’s second goal. The United States attacker drove into the box and pulled back a low cross for Carpenter to convert.
Four minutes later, James curled a superb finish into the far corner after being played in by Lucy Bronze. Nusken, who had been on the pitch for only five minutes, added a fourth with a powerful strike, and Hamano made it five with a swerving effort from 30 yards.
Gaupset pulled one back late on after winning the ball on the edge of Chelsea’s box and finishing at the near post, but Carpenter completed the scoring in stoppage time.
The result gives Bompastor 125 points from her first 50 WSL matches, more than any manager in the league’s history.
Tottenham remain fourth but have played a game more than most of their rivals and have now suffered consecutive defeats.
