Within 10 days of being at the Benue Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp following the Yelwata attacks that claimed the lives of over 200 people, about 10 babies have been born at the camp.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) disclosed that the organisation had successfully delivered four pregnant Yelwata attack survivors of their babies within days after they arrived at the international market camp.
This is even as the Water and Sanitation Specialist, UNICEF, Enugu field Office, Rebecca Bolatito-Gabriek, disclosed that the organisation had provided over 30,000 litres of water daily to the over 4,000 Yelwata IDPs who have taken refuge at the Makurdi International Market in support of the state government in tackling some of the humanitarian challenges.
The health specialist at the UNICEF field office in Enugu, Dr. Ifeyinwa Anyanyo, disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent.
She rolled out the organisation’s interventions in the health sector and stated that over 910 persons with varying ailments had been treated.
“We are treating basic ailments like malaria, skin infection, urinary tract infections, diarrhea, pneumonia, as well as antenatal services for pregnant women and those with complicated issues due to shock and trauma are referred to the tertiary healthcare.”
Nutrition specialist, UNiCEF field Office, Enugu, Ngozi Onuora said over 50 children from 0-59 months in the camp were severely malnourished.
“We have administered vitamin A to them and plans are also underway to give Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (MMS),” she said.
