Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders in Borno State have dumped the party and joined the coalition’s African Democratic Congress (ADC).
This comes as a recent video on social media showed, former PDP governorship candidate and APC stalwart in Borno Mattawali Kashim Ibrahim Imam, having “a special dinner” at his Maiduguri residence with some political leaders in the state over plans to join the ADC.
Vice President Kashim Shettima hails from Borno State.
ADC was recently unveiled as the coalition’s platform which seeks to wrestle power from President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.
Amid speculations of the coalition drive to get some governors into its fold, the Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has dismissed himself from the coalition party.
However, some of the new entrants into the ADC are former PDP governorship aspirant, Idris Mamman Durkwa; former House minority leader and governorship aspirant Hon. Mohammed Umara Kumalia, 2023 Borno Central Senatorial Candidate on the platform of the PDP.
Others are, PDP 2023 Deputy Governorship candidate, Alhaji Saleh Kida; former PDP national treasurer, Alhaji Ali Wurge; 2023 PDP candidate for Bama, Ngala, Kala Balge federal constituency, Hon. Abdulrazaq Ahmed Zanna.
Also on the list are Hon. Maina Justice, who is a leader of stakeholders in Jere local government area; former House of Assembly member (Askira Uba LGA state constituency), Hon. Fali Wubulari; Borno North 2023 Senatorial candidate, Hon. Isa Lawan Kangar; and a youth mobiliser, Hon. Sheriff Bank.
Our correspondent reports that the resignation letters of the former PDP members were submitted at the ward levels.
Speaking on the development to our Correspondent in Maiduguri, Hon. Banki, who comforted the mass defection, blamed PDP leadership for the massive loss of members.
He also said the wave of defection into the ADC was a clear indication of a failed APC under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The youth leader said: “I am happy to inform you that the massive defection and resignation by prominent members of the opposition parties including the ruling APC as being witnessed recently in Borno State is a beginning of good things happening in the political industry in the state and the country as a whole.
“Nigerians, especially the grassroots have been promised Renewed Hope Agenda by President Tinubu, unfortunately, in the last two years into the APC -led government, the reverse is the case, as people no longer sleep with their two eyes closed, despite facing economic hardships due to bad policies and programmes”. Banki stated.
