The documented booklet consisting of 46 pages was produced to bridge the language barrier for stakeholders, especially from Nigeria and other Hausa-speaking countries to ensure they conduct themselves in the most environmentally friendly manner during hajj.

Launching the book on Thursday in Kano, BUK’s deputy vice-chancellor, research and development, Prof Amina Mustapha, noted that performing hajj is among the pillars of Islam, as such enhancing the knowledge of those who performed the exercise is key, especially on the content which before now was written in other languages.

She commended the university and the lead translator, Prof. Aliyu Barau, for bridging the knowledge gap.

In his remarks, Prof. Barau highlighted the increasing number of pilgrims amidst challenging environmental concerns and climate change.

He said about 1,300 pilgrims died in 2024 due to extreme heat and humidity, an increase in air pollution and with about 300 million liters of treatedĀ  sewage discharged daily into the Red Sea among other concerns, hence, the need for more sensitisation.

According to him, the Green Hajj Guide is originally an Arabic document designed to educate and guide pilgrims on conducting themselves in an environmentally friendly manner during Hajj and Umrah, which includes protecting the environment, promoting sanitation, ensuring the well-being of pilgrims among others.

He however hinted that the Hausa version of the book will help in educating and informing Hausa-speaking pilgrims on how to conduct themselves in ways that support Saudi authorities and fulfill the objectives of Hajj, which includes fighting climate change.
