The acting executive chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Hon. Kayode Oladele, has called on the Nigerian media to partner with the agency to promote fairness, equity, and national integration in the country.
Oladele made the call at an interactive meeting with journalists at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, where he underscored the media’s crucial role in strengthening national unity through accurate reporting and public enlightenment.
Highlighting the constitutional mandate of the FCC, the chairman noted that it was established under Section 153(1)(c) of the 1999 Constitution to ensure equitable distribution of federal appointments, employment opportunities, and infrastructure.
“Our mission is to give every Nigerian — regardless of state, ethnicity, or religion — a sense of belonging in the national space. This is not just a constitutional obligation; it is a moral imperative,” Oladele stated.
He stressed that the media serves as a vital bridge in conveying the essence of the Federal Character Principle to the public, especially in a diverse nation like Nigeria where communication and understanding are key to social harmony.
According to him, “The public’s understanding of what we do, why we do it, and how it affects their lives depends significantly on the clarity, accuracy, and consistency of media reportage.”
Oladele called on journalists to support the Commission’s mission by reporting objectively, supporting grassroots enlightenment, countering misinformation, and serving as a feedback channel for public concerns and suggestions.
“The media is not just a stakeholder; it is a strategic partner. When the media supports the right narrative—one rooted in truth, unity, and fairness—Nigeria wins,” he added.
He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to transparency and regular engagement with the media through briefings, data sharing, and an open-door policy aimed at fostering trust and mutual understanding.
The chairman also aligned the Commission’s objectives with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, pledging that the FCC would continue to promote policies that strengthen national unity and give every citizen a stake in the Nigerian project.
In concluding remarks, Oladele reminded all stakeholders that nation-building is a collective responsibility and urged the media to stand alongside the Commission in advancing equity, justice, and inclusion.
