Kano State governor, Alhaji Abba Yusuf, has flagged off the distribution of 54,600 bags of rice to support vulnerable residents and cushion the economic hardship faced by the underprivileged during the Ramadan fasting period.

According to a statement issued at the weekend by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, the initiative was aimed at easing the burden on the beneficiaries during the holy month.

He quoted the governor as saying that a total of 91 trucks of rice, equivalent to 54,600 bags of 50kg each, would be distributed in the 44 state local government areas of the state, including selected groups and individuals.

To ensure accountability and transparency in the distribution process, Yusuf announced the formation of supervisory committees at both state and local government levels, noting that, the state committee would be chaired by the Secretary to the State Government, with the Ministry of Agriculture serving as the coordinating agency for the supply and distribution exercise.

The governor also appealed to the Federal Government, corporate bodies and wealthy individuals to complement the state’s effort by supporting citizens during Ramadan period.

Also speaking, the Chairperson of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State, Hajiya Sa’adatu Yushau Soja, applauded the governor for involving local councils, assuring that the rice would be judiciously distributed to the intended beneficiaries.
