There was panic yesterday at the Ohaukwu local government area venue for the council chairman, Prince Ikechukwu Odono’s distribution of palliatives, as gunmen attacked the Ohaukwu Police Division at Ezzamgbo, a few meters away from the council’s headquarters.
The hoodlums numbering eight came in a bus and started shooting sporadically, which caused panic in the neighbourhood and, after that, set some vehicles ablaze.
The chairman of the council, Prince Odono, who confirmed the incident, said that no casualties were recorded, adding that policemen on duty foiled the attack and repelled the gunmen.
“Yes, some gunmen attacked the Ohaukwu Police Division today, but no life was lost, but the attackers burnt some vehicles at the police station.”
A source who also confirmed the attack said some gunmen started shooting at the police division in Ohaukwu, very close to the local government headquarters. The attack disrupted the distribution of palliatives in the council headquarters as people ran for safety.
“Everyone, including the chairman of the council, ran for their lives to avoid being hit by a stray bullet from the gunshots. There was serious panic and tension within the area. Both passersby, traders and other motorists within the area all ran away.”
The police command’s spokesperson, ASP Ukandu Joshua, did not pick up his calls to confirm the incident when this report was filed.
