The Imo State House of Assembly has proposed a law to regulate land administration in the state.

The law, which awaits Governor Hope Uzodimma’s assent, will replace the state Lands Administration and Geographical Information Service Law No.3 of 2021 and aim to enhance the efficiency and accessibility of land documents.

According to the deputy speaker of the Assembly, Amara Iwuanyanwu, who is also the chief sponsor of the law, the law will make land administrative processes easier, faster, and more effective while promoting transparency in all land transactions.

He stressed that the availability of modern technology, which he said has improved governance, will enable the state to provide reliable automation and digitalisation of the land registry.

The deputy speaker explained that the law aims to strengthen the land administration system to ensure greater transparency and efficiency in title issuance and dispute resolution.

Iwuanyanwu highlighted that the law would mandate a comprehensive digital transformation of land documentation to enable traceability, accessibility, and centralised monitoring across the state, thereby making administrative processes easier, faster, and more effective.

Hon. Iwuanyanwu stressed that, through the deployment of geographic information service system, the law would enhance urban and rural planning by supporting data-driven decision process.

The deputy speaker revealed that the law would also curb issues of land grabbing, racketeering and associated fraud across the state.

He submitted that the law will allow for an independent agency that will be empowered to checkmate illegal land activities, such as title forgeries, multiple allocations, and encroachments.

Consequently, the clerk of the House, Chinelo Emeghara, was mandated to prepare a clean copy of the law for the governor’s perusal and action.
