An unidentified man has narrowly escaped mob violence after allegedly attempting to steal an electricity cable from a pole in Goru village, Birnin Kebbi local government area of Kebbi State.
An eyewitness, Malam Usman Goru, said residents woke up on Wednesday to find the man dangling from the top of an electricity pole.
He said the suspect was known in the community for his alleged criminal activities.
According to Goru, the residents were later informed that he had climbed the pole, after which electricity supply to the village was interrupted. However, power was suddenly restored while he was allegedly attempting to cut the wires.
The man reportedly survived the electric shock but sustained injuries.
“We woke up and saw a man on top of an electricity pole, and we were told he climbed up to steal wires, but the power supply returned unexpectedly,” Goru said.
He added that community elders alerted the police and the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company personnel, who arrived at the scene and rescued the man.
However, as the suspect was being taken to hospital for medical attention, some residents gathered and attempted to assault him.
The police intervened and dispersed the crowd, averting a possible mob killing over the alleged theft of electricity cables.
