Singer Kizz Daniel’s official lyric video for his latest single, ‘To Be A Man,’ has reached 417,691 views and 14,000 likes, days after its release.

Perhaps the song’s popularity stems from the relativity of its message, which advocates for the appreciation of hardworking men and against toxic relationships in which women expect men to do most of the heavy lifting.

In the song, the artiste says women cannot “eat their cake and have it” – “it is either they settle for quality time with their men or the Gucci bag” they demand, which a man has to work hard to afford, often with no space for quality time.

While Daniel’s makes a good point with his lyrics, it’s not all black and white. Lazy men can abuse situations like he painted, type A workaholics who don’t know when to stop, and men who basically are looking for excuses to cheat or not be around their spouse/partner.

Hence, the line “If you no do again, Halima dey wait. This your pattern no work again, Come back again, Ma ni wa ley,” is a bit problematic.

Indeed, however, women do need to know that it’s not easy being a man in present times. They should learn to appreciate those who work hard to take care of their own, rather than “push until they see their death” or show no appreciation when they “work 16 hours per day, no time off, no holiday.”

On the other hand, men should also know how to turn off the work mode and allow for quality time in their relationships because money alone cannot sustain a relationship. Either both couples are getting the quality time and comfortable lifestyle from their partner, or they are seeking whichever of the two they lack elsewhere.
