The Lagos State Government has commenced clearance operations at Maiyegun-Lekki Beach along the Lekki-Epe Expressway as part of ongoing efforts to remove illegal structures and environmental nuisances from coastal areas.

The announcement was made on Monday by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a post shared on his official X account.

According to him, enforcement and sanitation teams have been deployed to the area as part of a coordinated operation to reclaim public waterfronts.

Wahab said the exercise is aimed at addressing illegal encroachments, shanties and activities that degrade the environment along beaches and coastal corridors.

He explained that the government is committed to protecting Lagos’ waterfronts and ensuring they are not taken over by unsafe or unauthorised developments.

“The clearance operations are currently ongoing at Maiyegun-Lekki Beach. This exercise is part of our sustained commitment to reclaim and protect our waterfronts,” he stated.

He added that he was receiving real-time updates from field officers carrying out the operation on ground.

The commissioner described the Maiyegun-Lekki axis as a critical stretch, warning that it must not be allowed to deteriorate into a hub for environmental abuse or unsafe activities.

“We will not allow it to become a haven for activities that degrade our environment and threaten public safety,” he said.

Wahab reaffirmed that the government’s action is aimed at safeguarding the environment for residents today and future generations of Lagosians.
