Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old man, Mr. Adeshina Gilbert, for the alleged murder of a commercial driver in Obudu local government area of the state.
The police public relations officer Irene Ugbo, confirmed the arrest in Calabar to LEADERSHIP.
Ugbo said the suspect who is a resident of Abonkib community, Obudu Urban, Obudu local government of Cross River is at present cooling his feet in police custody.
He said the police combed the nooks and crannies of the council for the suspect following the state police commissioner’s directives that he should be fished out and brought to book.
A statement signed by the PPRO Irene Ugbo, sighted by LEADERSHIP stated, “The Command is sad to confirm a tragic incident involving the brutal murder of a commercial driver, Agage Ternenge, which occurred as a fallout on Friday, July 18, 2025.”
The police’s statement dated July 21, 2025 reads, “Following a deputed land between Vandeikya in Benue State and Obudu local government area of Cross River State.
“The victim, a native of Mbanyam in Mbatyough Council Ward, Vandeikya local government area, Benue State, was reportedly attacked and stoned to death while delivering a waybill to an individual in Obudu.
“A disturbing video of the incident, now circulating on social media, shows the inhumane assault carried out by a group of hoodlums,” the statement maintained.
Earlier, the state commissioner of police, CP Rashid Afegbua, who condemned the act, described it as barbaric, gross violation of fundamental human rights and dignity of person stressing that the police would go the extra miles to apprehend other suspects who are still on the run.
