The federal ministry of environment has placed additional locations and local governments in Abia, Adamawa and Benue states on flood alert.
A circular released by the ministry’s National Flood Early Warning Center (FEW CENTER) signed by the director, erosion, flood and coastal management department, Usman Abdullahi Bokani, said the alert was being given in addition to the prediction it issued on September 24.
The circular placed Borno, Cross River, Ebonyi, Imo, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Nassarawa and Niger states on its watch list.
The ministry urged residents and state governments to clear drainage channels, avoid dumping refuse in waterways and relocate from low-lying areas to avert disaster.
“Relevant stakeholders should take note and provide feedback to the ministry,” Bokani said, stressing that emergency management agencies and local authorities must remain on high alert.
The fresh advisory followed an earlier warning issued on September 24, as the country continues to battle intense rainfall and rising water levels across major river basins.
Locations on the circular include Aba, Eziama, Umuahia, Eket, Oron, Edor, Otukpo, Abinsi, Bama, Abakaliki, Owerri, Daura, Birnin Kebbi, Jega, Kamba and Saminaka.
