The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has elected Akinteye Babatunde, a student of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), as its new national president at the end of its 2026 national convention held at the Old Parade Ground in Abuja.

Akinteye, a former NANS Senate President, emerged winner after a keenly contested election involving five presidential candidates, succeeding outgoing president Olushola Oladoja.

The convention, conducted under tight security with operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) on ground, was described by participants as one of the most peaceful in the history of the student body.

Speaking after his emergence, Akinteye thanked delegates for the confidence reposed in him, pledging to sustain the gains of the outgoing administration while strengthening unity among Nigerian students.

“The leadership of NANS has conducted our election successfully and the new leadership has emerged. I thank all the delegates for electing me, a student of OAUSTECH, as the new president of NANS,” he said.

He added that the peaceful conduct of the convention marked a positive shift for the association.

“In the history of NANS, this is one of the best conventions we have witnessed. There was no crisis, no gunshot, no fight,” he said.

Akinteye further assured that his administration would prioritise students’ welfare and reposition NANS for greater national impact.

“Our activities will soon be felt across campuses and the country will know that NANS is active and committed to students’ welfare,” he said.

Outgoing president Oladoja described the election outcome as a moment of fulfilment, expressing confidence in the new leadership.

“I am happy that the person who emerged is someone I strongly believe in and trust in terms of capacity,” he said.

Chairman of the Independent Convention Planning Committee, Omotayo Samuel, said over 300 delegates participated in the election, drawn from student union governments and institutions across the country.

The presidential contest featured candidates from OAUSTECH, Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Federal University of Technology Akure, Olabisi Onabanjo University, and Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta.
