A non-profit/non-governmental organisation, the Citizens’ Gavel, has asked the president of the Court of Appeal, Monica Dongban-Mensem, to ensure that the appointment of judges for election petition tribunals for Edo and Ondo state governorship elections is conducted with the utmost transparency and integrity.

Citizens’ Gavel in a statement signed by its communications associate, Charles Akintola, applauded the recent appointment of the new chief justice of Nigeria and chairman of the National Judicial Council.

Akintola urged the president of the Court of Appeal to establish and publicise structured criteria, prohibit conflicted appointments and ensure the integrity of appointed judges.

The NGO recommended that the chief justice establish a monitoring system to oversee the election petition tribunals, ensuring that the processes are transparent and accountable.

It believes these steps will strengthen the judiciary’s integrity and uphold democratic principles at this critical time. It appreciates His Lordship’s attention to this urgent matter and looks forward to seeing the judiciary rise to the occasion in these critical elections.
