The National Universities Commission (NUC) and Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) have given full accreditation to Taraba State University (TSU) Jalingo to graduate students from the Department of Medical Laboratory Science in the institution.

The vice chancellor of TSU Jalingo, Prof. Sunday Bako, revealed the development while speaking exclusively with LEADERSHIP in his office on recent developments concerning students of the department over accreditation, indexing and certification (Practical Examination) with the MLSCN.

LEADERSHIP gathered that TSU Jalingo has graduated 1,116 from the medical laboratory science department from sets 2021, 2022 and 2023, a huge number of potential workers that, if engaged in the labour market, could bring relief to the already challenging health sector in the state.

Bako said the Medical Laboratory Science Department has gotten full accreditation from both NUC and MLSCN, while the Medical Council has commenced indexing the students for the practical certification examination, which would allow the university to graduate students without hitches.

He called on the three sets of students who have already graduated from the university to prepare themselves for the certification examination, which he said will commence in the next few weeks.

“The NUC and MLSCN have since granted us full accreditation, the process of graduating medical students is not as easy as many other departments, the medical and laboratory students must undergo practical examination which will be monitored by the MLSCN before they will graduate from any given institution.

“We started the programme here since 2018 without accreditation, so far, three sets of students have been graduated, that is from 2021, 2022 and 2023, they are all waiting for the certification examination which is now ready.

“In few weeks time, the council will come and conduct the examination here in the university, the students will be graduated, as a university, we have already done with their documentations,  their results are handy while they wait for the certification examination.

“We have also gone ahead to arrange with MLSCN to come over here in Jalingo to conduct the examination, normally, students do travel from their various schools to write the examination in Abuja, but because of the large number of the students from here which comprises of three sets, we were able to arrange with the national council to come over and conduct the examination here in Jalingo.”

Bako assured both students and their parents of the university’s commitment to ensuring that students from the institution graduate with useful results that benefit not only their personal interests but also the entire society.
