In a bid to push forward innovation in healthcare education, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has launched a key assessment at the new Federal University of Allied Health Sciences Enugu (FUAHSE) in Enugu State, with the verification process of the approved 18 degree programmes for the commencement of the University.

This milestone comes after President Bola Tinubu’s approval on March 15, 2024, for the conversion and upgrade of the former Federal College of Dental Technology and Therapy into the Federal University of Allied Health Sciences, Enugu. The move aims to enhance human resources development in the health and social welfare sector of the country.

In anticipation of the 2024/2025 academic session, the university’s inaugural Senate has approved 22 programmes across five allied healthcare faculties while NUC directed verification of 18 out of the 22 programmes for take-off in the 2024/2025 academic session.

One of the team leaders overseeing the verification process, Jude Akubue, expressed excitement for the historic exercise. He highlighted the importance of adhering to the Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standard (CCMAS) documents, which serve as a benchmark for assessment.

The team, comprising experts from institutions like Ahmadu Bello University, Nnamdi Azikwe University, and Babcock University, will evaluate the 18 programmes based on the outlined standards.

In his welcoming remarks, the Acting Vice Chancellor of FUAHSE, Prof. John Emaimo, conveyed gratitude to President Tinubu for his role in facilitating the birth of the university. He emphasised the university’s commitment to addressing current societal challenges and shaping the minds of young individuals.

Prof. Emaimo assured the verification team of the university’s readiness to cooperate and implement any recommendations for accreditation of the degree courses.

The commencement of the verification process marks a significant step towards the establishment of the first Health Science University in Nigeria. With a dedicated team of experts guiding the university through this crucial phase, FUAHSE is poised to make a lasting impact on healthcare and social welfare education in Nigeria.
