NUJ Faults Wike Over Threatening Remark Against Journalist

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed shock and outrage over what it described as a “reckless and violent” remark by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, against a Channels Television journalist, Seun Okinbaloye.

Wike, during a media chat last week, reportedly said that if it were possible, he would have broken his television screen and shot the journalist over comments made on the dangers of a one-party system of government.

Reacting in a statement, the NUJ described the comment as deeply troubling and unacceptable, especially coming from a public office holder of such high standing.

The union noted that such utterances not only threaten press freedom but also endanger the safety of journalists who play a critical role in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.

It stressed that public officials must exercise restraint and uphold democratic values, including respect for divergent opinions and the independence of the media.

The NUJ further called on relevant authorities to take note of the development and ensure that journalists are protected from intimidation and threats in the course of their duties.

The body reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights and safety of media professionals across the country, urging all stakeholders to promote responsible engagement and constructive dialogue in the public space.
