The Osun State Football Association (Osun FA) has announced a significant overhaul of its SmartCity Osun State Football League, transforming it into a professional, 12-team elite competition. The move aims to establish Osun State as a leading hub for player development and a global platform for football talent.
Approved by the Osun FA’s Executive Board, the restructuring addresses the need for greater international visibility, commercial potential, and professional governance. The new 12-team format is designed to elevate the standard of play, attracting broadcasters, major corporate sponsors, and international scouts.
Participating clubs will compete in a double round-robin, playing 22 matches each over a concentrated three to five-month season. The league will be overseen by an independent board, featuring a Chief Operating Officer, Technical Director, and Marketing Director, all operating under stringent club licensing and anti-corruption protocols.
A centralised player database and performance analytics will offer global scouts real-time data on Osun’s top talent. Furthermore, live streaming, over-the-top (OTT) distribution, and digital highlight packages are planned to engage the Osun diaspora and football fans worldwide.
The league’s sustainable revenue model will incorporate title sponsorships, broadcasting rights, kit partnerships, and player transfer commissions. Beyond the sporting impact, the initiative is expected to boost the local economy through job creation in sports management, digital media, and hospitality, while also promoting community unity and youth empowerment.
Mayor Sola Fanawopo, Chairman of the Osun FA Executive Board, commented: “This 12-team league is more than a tournament; it is a strategic investment in the youth and economic future of Osun State. We invite private investors, corporate partners, and the global Osun community to join us in building a model for sub-national football development in West Africa.”
To ensure transparency, the league will undergo annual independent audits, with comprehensive performance reports on viewership, sponsorship value, and international transfers being published by the Osun FA.
