The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), in collaboration with key stakeholders, has emphasized the urgent need for the inclusion of individuals with disabilities in leadership roles across various sectors in Nigeria.

This call to action was made during a one-day conference titled “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” held on November 27 at the Abuja Intercontinental Hotel. The Stakeholders’ Conference brought together experts and advocates to discuss strategies for ensuring that people with disabilities are actively involved in shaping policies.

According to reports, persons with disabilities (PWDs) remain significantly underrepresented in leadership positions throughout Nigeria, despite the existence of anti-discriminatory laws designed to promote their inclusion.

At the official opening of the conference, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Disability Matters, Hon. Bashiru Dawodu, represented by Hon. Lanre Okunola, a member of the committee, underscored the importance of including persons with disabilities in leadership roles across various sectors. He stressed that doing so could drive meaningful and sustainable growth for society.

“This gathering is a testament to our collective commitment to creating a more inclusive society where persons with disabilities are not just participants but leaders in shaping our national development agenda. As Chairman of the House Committee on Disability Matters, I firmly believe that including persons with disabilities is not just a social obligation, but a catalyst for sustainable growth and innovation”

“Empowering persons with disabilities to take leadership roles ensures diverse perspectives in decision making and strengthens the foundation of equity and justice in our nation.” He noted.

Dr. Jummai Umar-Ajijola, an expert in inclusion and development, highlighted the challenges faced by persons with disabilities. She pointed out that the unemployment rate among people with disabilities remains alarmingly high, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

“The unemployment rate among persons with disabilities remains high, and addressing this issue requires action from the private, public, and civil society sectors, as economic empowerment plays a significant role in shaping leadership opportunities” Dr. Umar-Ajijola said.

She also stressed the importance of ensuring that people with disabilities are actively engaged in government policies and programs for equal opportunities. Dr. Umar-Ajijola noted that true inclusion can only be achieved if persons with disabilities are adequately represented in the government.
