In a significant push toward sustainable transportation and energy reform, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has handed over 35 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses to the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNG-i).

The symbolic presentation, which took place on Monday at the NNPC Towers in Abuja, was led by Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari.

Receiving the vehicles on behalf of the PCNG-i was Mr. Michael Oluwagbemi, the initiative’s Chief Executive Officer.

According to a statement posted on NNPC’s official Facebook page, the donation underscored the national oil company’s “strategic commitment to deepening gas utilisation and supporting Nigeria’s transition to cleaner, more affordable energy for transportation.”

The move was part of the national gas expansion programme and it aligned with Nigeria’s broader climate goals, aiming to reduce the country’s carbon emissions while addressing transportation costs.

“This milestone reflects a bold step toward reducing Nigeria’s carbon footprint, enhancing energy security, and providing long-term socio-economic benefits for Nigerians,” the statement read.

The CNG initiative, introduced by the Federal Government, seeks to promote alternative fuel options that are environmentally friendly and economically viable, especially in light of rising petrol costs and global concerns about climate change.

NNPCL described the gesture as an example of its leadership role in “accelerating the national gas expansion programme and powering the future with sustainable solutions.”
