The anti-crime security squad coordinated by operatives of the police command made the recovery when they stormed a criminal hideout in Achalla, headquarters of Awka North local government area of Anambra State, yesterday.

The joint security team, according to the police spokesperson, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, recovered 300 rounds of machine gun and 34 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition for AK-47 rifles.

Tochukwu said the commissioner of police, Aderemi Adeoye, ordered the operation after a gang of hoodlums disrupted trading at Achalla Market the previous Monday and forced the traders to observe “sit-at-home” ordered by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) which its leadership had cancelled.

He said though the hoodlums fled when the joint security operatives burst their camp, some of them escaped with severe bullet wounds from the fire power of the security operatives.
