The House of Representatives has admonished the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to clear blocked drains and repair drainage systems on Shehu Shagari Way, LaSalle Junction, Alvan Ikoku Way and other flood- prone areas in Abuja.
This followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by the member representing Otukpo/Ohimini federal constituency of Benue state, Hon. Blessing Onyeche Onuh, at plenary on Thursday.
Presenting the motion, Onuh noted the importance of taking care of sewages and waterway system is essential for preventing hazardous backups.
She stated that blocked waterways and sewage systems have caused persistent flooding along major roads, particularly Shehu Shagari Way, LaSalle Junction, and Alvan Ikoku Way at Minister Hill, including the Area Councils in FCT.
“These problems stem from poor drainage maintenance and blocked channels resulting in stagnant water that emits foul odors and poses serious health and environmental hazards to residents and commuters,” the lawmaker said.
Onuh expressed worry that the resulting unhygienic conditions from stagnant water and blocked drains increase the risk of waterborne diseases and affect the quality of life within the FCT.
She lamented that despite repeated public complaints, the response from relevant authorities has remained inadequate, with insufficient proactive measures.
Adopting the motion, the House asked FCTA to implement a comprehensive sewage evacuation and drainage maintenance plan and also engage urban planning and environmental experts to develop long-term strategies for preventing block sewages in the nation’s capital.
