The Rotary Club of Asokoro has presented 12 wardrobes to the Model Girls Junior Secondary School in AMAC Estate to improve the students’ learning experience.
The donation coincided with Rotary International’s Basic Education and Literacy Month.
At the event, the club’s president, Rotn Chinagorum Onuora, stressed the importance of catering for the basic needs of vulnerable children.
“These are basic necessities for basic education. We believe that this support will assist the students at the foundation of their academic journey to help build the nation.
“Education is empowerment. It helps individuals navigate the world. That is why we felt it was necessary to provide these children with a good and enabling environment where they can read, grow, and compete with their counterparts worldwide,” she said.
The president shared her motivation for the donation, revealing the dire conditions she observed during a visit to the school.
“I came personally, and I was taken around the hostels. I saw how the girls were suffering, with nowhere to keep their bags and clothes scattered everywhere.
It was disheartening,” she noted.
Despite thisdonation, Onuora highlighted that, due to resource limitations, only half of the school’s 24 dormitory rooms had been furnished.
She called for further assistance, appealing to the community, “The remaining 12 rooms are waiting for good-spirited individuals, corporate bodies, or the government to intervene. Let’s build our children and give them a conducive learning environment.”
The school community expressed overwhelming appreciation for the gesture through the vice principal, Mr Shangawo Danlami.
“I am highly impressed. This is a lofty and laudable project. You have touched the lives of these students in a way they will never forget,” he said.
