The exercise is now fixed for August 9, 2025, following the recent judgement of the Supreme Court, which invalidated the previous elections held in 2024 for failing to comply with extant law.

RSIEC chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (Retired), announced the new date on Wednesday during a stakeholder meeting at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt.

The meeting was used to officially unveil the timetable and guidelines for the fresh local government elections in the state.

Enebeli reiterated the electoral body’s commitment to conducting a free, fair, credible, and impartial election, urging political parties to adhere to the rules.

Recall that the Supreme Court had on February 28, 2025, annulled the October 5, 2024 local government elections in the state, insisting that the RSIEC did not follow the provisions of the Electoral Act.

Recall that candidates of opposition political party, the Action Peoples Party (APP), won 22 out of the 23 local government chairmanship seats during the elections.

The development followed the refusal of the two major political parties in the state, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), to participate in the local government elections.
