The “Shake and Win World Cup Campaign”, which was run by Africa’s top browser Opera Mini, has been a huge success, the company has announced.

The campaign, which was run during the just concluded Qatar 2022 World Cup won by Lionel Messi-led Argentina, catapulted Opera Mini into the number one downloaded app over the weekend in Nigeria thanks to the tremendous success of Opera’s “Shake and Win” campaign on the continent.

The campaign required users to shake their phone to potentially win airtime, cash prizes, or brand-new phones and Nigerians were especially caught up in the spirit of the fun, with daily shakes peaking at over 900,000 shakes in the app, and over 140,000 prizes given away.

Football fans across the continent responded enthusiastically to the excitement of this year’s unforgettable tournament – Qatar 2022 World Cup.

“Over 13 million people participated across the continent, shaking their phones over 1,000,000 times a day. More than 200,000 prizes have been won, with many grateful users taking to social media to comment on how much fun they’ve had with “Shake and Win.”

“The ‘Shake and Win’ campaign was a huge success, and we’ve been honored to share the overwhelming emotions of the World Cup with our users. Football fans in Nigeria should continue to keep their eyes on Opera Mini, since we plan to continue bringing amazing user experiences to football fans there, especially with the return of the Premier League just around the corner,” said Jørgen Arnesen, EVP Mobile at Opera.

Argentina won the World Cup on Sunday in a scintillating final which was decided on post-match penalties. They beat France 4-2 after a 3-3 draw after extra time.

Just like the final, the Qatar World Cup delivered buckets of excitement including Saudi Arabia’s historic win over Argentina to Cameroon’s stunning victory over Brazil – and capped off by Morocco gritty win over Ronaldo’s Portugal to become the first African nation to reach the semi-final – fans have been treated to a feast of football upsets.
