In a bold move to expand access to quality higher education and position Yobe State as a leader in biomedical engineering and healthcare innovation, Governor Mai Mala Buni has inaugurated the Steering Committee for the establishment of the Yobe State Institute of Biomedical Engineering Technology (YIBET).

A statement from the Media Coordinator and Liaison Office of the SSG, Ibrahim Baba Saleh said the Governor had earlier constituted the Steering Committee to provide strategic direction and technical oversight for the planning and establishment of the proposed institute, with a mandate to develop a sustainable and internationally competitive centre of excellence in biomedical engineering education, research, innovation, healthcare technology, and human capital development.

Speaking during the inauguration, Governor Buni, represented by the Acting Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Mohammed Goje, described the establishment of YIBET as a strategic investment in the future of education, science, technology, and healthcare delivery in Yobe State.

He said the institute would bridge the gap in specialised biomedical engineering education, promote cutting-edge research and innovation, and produce highly skilled professionals capable of addressing emerging healthcare challenges while contributing to national development.

Governor Buni expressed confidence in the competence and experience of the committee members, urging them to approach their assignment with diligence, professionalism, and commitment to delivering a solid foundation for the institution.

He noted that upon completion, YIBET would position Yobe State as a national hub for biomedical engineering education and healthcare technology, attracting academic collaboration, research partnerships, and investment in the health and education sectors.

Responding on behalf of the committee, its Chairman and Commissioner for Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof. Mohammed Bello Kawuwa, assured the Governor that members would leverage their expertise to lay a strong foundation for the successful establishment of one of Nigeria’s leading biomedical engineering institutes.

Prof. Kawuwa thanked Governor Buni for the confidence reposed in the committee and commended the administration’s foresight in initiating a landmark institution that would strengthen medical education, stimulate innovation, and enhance the state’s reputation as an emerging centre for academic excellence and healthcare technology.

The Steering Committee comprises the Vice Chancellor of Yobe State University, Damaturu; the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministries of Higher Education, Health and Human Services, and Budget and Economic Planning; the Chief Medical Directors of Yobe State University Teaching Hospital and Yobe State Specialist Hospital; representatives of the Nigerian Society of Biomedical Engineering, Yobe State Chapter, and the School of Biomedical Engineering, University of Maiduguri.
