Hajiya Nana Kashim Shettima, wife of the vice president of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima has commended has applauded FAME Foundation for its commitment to toward empowering women, especially the girl child, using the power of sports.
She gave the commendation during the 2024 International Women’s Football Tournament held in Abuja to Mark this year’s International Women’s Day with the theme ‘Count HER In: Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.’
Represented by Bilikisu Abubakar Kyari, the wife of the minister of agriculture, Shettima lauded FAME Foundation’s significant contributions in promoting the social, emotional, and economic well-being of women and girls nationwide. She highlighted the organisation’s impactful programs that encourage women’s participation in societal growth, emphasizing the need to bridge the gender gap.
She emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors to empower women and develop programs supporting the girl-child’s educational and skill acquisition endeavors.
The tournament, which was s in its 5th edition aligned with the global celebration of International Women’s Day, which is dedicated to celebrate women’s achievements, promoting gender equality, and empowering women around the world.
Earlier, the executive director of FAME Foundation, Mrs Aderonke Ogunleye-Bello, said the football competition was intentionally chosen because of its powerful tool of uniting Nigerians.
She announced that 10 girls from low and middle income families will be given scholarships to further their education.
She said: “Whenever sports, especially football, the most popular game in Nigeria, is being played, nobody cares about where you are from and the language you speak, we all just embrace ourselves and we are happy with one another.
“This is why FAME Foundation is intentionally using sports to bring people together to chat a way forward and we can support women.
“There are brilliant girls with potential, but they are from low or middle-income homes. We are here to give them full scholarships today. So, today is a day we will do everything together to support women, embrace inclusion, empowering young girl in the county.”
