Stakeholders in the energy sector have stressed the need for Nigeria to intensify efforts on improved electricity supply to the rural areas to boost the standard of living.
Speaking at the Association of Rural Electrification Contractors of Nigeria (ARECON), Annual General Meeting 2022, theme:”Off grid power generation:key to industrial and economic growth of a nation” the in coming chairman of the association, High Chief Raphael Adidi noted that the development would improve business activities and productivity.
He also said constant supply has the capacity of ensuring the reduction of mass immigration from the rural areas to urban cities, adding that the government would support all electrification projects in the rural areas.
“We are going to look at how we can deliver electricity at the grassroots adding that the electricity is one of the major challenge facing by the rural populace in Nigeria.
“So ARECON attention is at the rural areas because we want to make sure that the rural areas are being captured by the government. And also we are also enlightened our members on technology because everything today is done by technology and if you look at the things that we were using 20 years ago is not the things that we are using now.
“We want the government to put more funds in to the power sector because the sector is lacking behind. If you look at it very well you will discover that the power system in Nigeria is still the remain the main problem and without power there is no economy that can strive,” Adidi said.
Earlier in his welcome address, the acting chairman of the association, Lamideeen Yussuf, said under his leadership, the association secured collaboration with the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) in sanitizing the power energy sector and training qualified electrical engineers across the federation.
