Nigeria has one of the most vibrant, globally influential art scenes in the world. Selecting just five means looking at artists who have not only achieved immense commercial and critical success but have fundamentally reshaped contemporary visual language. Here are five of the most globally significant visual artists from Nigeria, spanning legendary pioneers to contemporary masters:

El Anatsui

Though born in Ghana, El Anatsui spent over four decades as a professor at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and is deeply woven into the fabric of Nigerian art history. Born in 1944, he is globally celebrated for transforming simple, discarded materials into monumental, shimmering sculptures.

It became more than a hit song, really. It became part of Nigerian pop culture history.

Yinka Shonibare CBE

Based between London and Lagos, Shonibare, born in 1962, is a British-Nigerian conceptual artist whose work explores colonialism, post-colonialism, and cultural identity through a brilliant use of textiles.

D’banj’s charisma mixed with Don Jazzy’s production created a sound that felt youthful and fresh for Nigerian pop music at the time.

Njideka Akunyili Crosby

Based in Los Angeles, Akunyili Crosby, born in 1983, creates intricate, large-scale works that reflect the experience of the modern African diaspora.

Peju Alatise
